Resilience and Its Importance

We have always talked about different strengths we possess, like courage, intelligence, wisdom, communication, persuasion, and strengths that are unaddressed or unknown to many of us, especially in environments like the best humanities college where such qualities are nurtured. The term “resilience” stands for the ability to not give up even in adverse situations. Or we can say the ability to bounce back after going through traumatic events. Life without problems is too good to be true. Oftentimes in life we face situations that are sudden and leave everlasting impact on us. The event of losing loved ones, divorce, or natural calamities are some of those that puts a person in a situation from where it is very hard to come out or cope with. Possessing high resilience effects, the way a person would take such events and will deal with it. According to research findings the one who has high resilience takes needful time and comparatively bounce back more easily than the ones who are low on resilience. And not only do people deal effectively with catastrophes, but they tend to excel more in life as compared with the past life they had before the event happened.

Example of Resilience: Tony Stark (Iron Man)

We can see the story of Tony Stark, who is popularly known as The Iron Man, he was not the hero from the time he was born his life was full of ups and downs when he was captured and was isolated from the world in the cave. Even after escaping, Tony didn’t suddenly become perfect. He struggled with guilt, with responsibility, and with the consequences of his past actions. He made mistakes, failed also doubted himself. But every time he failed he came back stronger and more courageous. His continuous choice of rebuilding and proactively working towards the future is what resilience is. Resilience is not something that could be known in stories; it is something that could be built within ourselves

With the Changing times and increased difficulties, one should work on building resilience in order to have more healthy manner of coping and making better choices. Several ways that could help us

Ways to Build Resilience:

  1. Acceptance instead of avoidance

Acceptance doesn’t stand for liking the situation; it means looking toward things as they are. Once we accept the reality, we can work towards coping with It. Avoidance might lead to short-term relief, but in the long run the suppressed Emotions may surface again.

  2. Having well-defined Goals

When life has aims and goals, they give us internal motivation to bounce back from setbacks.

  3. Gradual exposure to challenge

Resilience is not something that could be built overnight. It builds in small moment, the moment that comes with difficulties, discomfort, and distress.

  4. Developing Rational thinking pattern

Our belief systems impact our attitude and behavior. The way you Interpret the events’ impact on your power of resilience more than the event itself.

  5. Keeping your physical well-being intact

A healthy lifestyle, sleep, and nutrition directly affect the mental resilience. Being fit is not a choice but a necessity.

So just Like Iron Man, who didn’t become stronger overnight and showed resilience, it would be built through small steps. So, the next time you fall, make sure not to give up but stand stronger than where you were.
