Biyani Group of Colleges was privileged to welcome Dr. Kiran Bedi, India’s first woman IPS officer on the beginning of Oorja 2026, a flagship student orientation program to nurture young minds with positivity, curiosity, and life changing interactions with experts from all walks of life.
Dr. Kiran Bedi’s interaction with teachers first at the Biyani Group of Colleges campus was a powerful reminder that great education begins with great educators. Today, the role of a teacher should not limit to completing the syllabus rather it is preparing students for a rapidly changing world. These life changing lessons are based on interactions with Dr. Kiran Bedi and align well with NEP 2020.
1. Upgrade Yourself Every Day
Dr. Bedi encouraged every educator to become a lifelong learner and practice reading newspaper daily, reading something new every day, listen to latest ideas, informative podcasts, or panel discussions. It is most important to make notes of it and build a personal library of knowledge. There is a constant need for updating them. Over time, these notes become a valuable reservoir of updated knowledge that educators can take help from while delivering lectures and making classroom discussions enriching.
2. Enthusiasm is Contagious
Students absorb not only knowledge but also the energy of their teachers. Energy is one of the greatest teaching tools. That is why we begin our new academic session with positive energy in the form of Student Orientation Program Oorja.
Learning becomes more interesting and enjoyable when teacher brings enthusiasm, positivity, and passion to the classroom. Energy is one of the greatest tools in the entire universe.
3. Every Student is Equal
Teachers should find students who need special attention and invite them to sit in the front rows. Maintaining eye contact and personal interaction with the students can create stronger engagement and build lifelong trust.
4. Teacher’s Greatest Gift is Curiosity
Artificial Intelligence can provide all kinds of information instantly in one single click. However, technology cannot generate curiosity, it is the teachers who must ignite it.
Our responsibility is to inspire students to ask meaningful questions because only curious minds become lifelong learners.
5. Continuous Innovation
The need of the hour is continuous innovation that is bringing something new to the table. Dr. Bedi remarked that if we do not keep bringing something new into our teaching, we risk becoming obsolete. She even suggested that professional growth and increments should be linked to how much innovation and fresh value a teacher brings into the classroom.
6. Focus on Skills
Education should prepare students for life and careers. She encouraged greater emphasis on:
- Vocational skills
- Practical exposure
- Case-study based learning
- Real-life problem solving
Students learn best when concepts are connected to practical situations.
7. Never Blame Students
One of the most thought-provoking messages was:
“Students should never be blamed for a boring class. It is the teacher’s challenge to make learning interesting.”
Today, educators have access to many AI tools, digital platforms, simulations, and interactive teaching methods. The opportunity to innovate is immense, the only thing needed is for educators to come out of their comfort shell.
8. Think Beyond the Syllabus
The syllabus is only the minimum requirement left now which can easily be covered by students themselves using AI. Great teachers expose students to ideas beyond textbooks, helping them develop critical out of the box thinking, creativity, values, and a broader understanding of the world for holistic development.
9. Big Change Begins with Small Daily Decisions
Sharing her experience from Tihar Jail, Dr. Bedi reflected on one of the toughest leadership journeys of her career. She explained that the remarkable transformation of Tihar was not the result of one grand decision. Instead, every day she made one improvement, solved one problem, and took one meaningful decision. Over time, these small actions accumulated into extraordinary Prison reforms. This philosophy applies equally to education and life.
10. Life’s Examination Can Happen Anytime
Dr. Bedi concluded with a powerful thought:
“Prepare every day. The examination in life can happen at any time.”
Success is not built overnight. Daily learning, continuous improvement, disciplined habits, and consistent action prepare us for opportunities and challenges whenever they arise.
In a world where AI can answer every question, the true role of a teacher is to inspire curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and build character through meaningful learning experiences that are worth reflecting. As Dr. Kiran Bedi reminded us, transformation does not happen through one extraordinary act, it is the cumulative result of making one positive change and taking one meaningful decision every single day.
