BCA Team Secures Second Prize with Flood Management App at Hackathon
Students of Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) at Biyani Girls College have once again proved their capability by showing their creativity, technical knowledge, and social responsibility by developing a visionary Flood Disaster Management System held at the XIMI Inter-college Hackathon Competition on 14th March, 2026, in which students (Tanisha Soni, Khyati Agarwal, and Neha Solankee of BCA IInd Semester) secured second position after competing with other teams from other colleges.
During disasters like floods, rural communities face three major issues, which include lack of information about shelter availability, no updates on shelter capacity and food availability, and people using basic keypad phones who cannot access internet facilities. Keeping all these lacking points in mind, BCA students developed a website that solves these problems by providing real-time shelter information and food distribution alerts. It alerts people with a message about food timings; if there are chances of a flood, an SMS and a voice message alert will automatically be sent, and it also predicts flood risk much earlier by using a weather data API.
They used technologies like Laravel, MySQL, OpenStreetMap, OpenWeather, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and others too. So their goal is to help people by detecting risks earlier and responding to them in a faster, smarter, and accessible way, even to people who use basic keypad phones. They have some superb future ideas for this website too, and by implementing them, it will save lives during emergencies.
Participating in the competition was truly a wonderful experience as they got a chance to apply their technical knowledge to real-world problems as a team. During the development of their project, they worked together as a team to find a unique and user-friendly solution to the problem, which would help rural communities as well as urban areas during emergencies. Working together, they understood the importance of teamwork in developing a project.
Also, the event provided them an opportunity to represent their idea and showcase their talent in front of others. Presenting their idea in front of the judge helped them in certain ways, like they got a chance to improve their presentation skills and they gained more knowledge about the technical field, which also helped them in strengthening their teamwork. Solving a real-world problem encouraged them to keep working on projects like this and participate in more competitions to help people of India.
