Significance of Republic Day in India

The term “Republic” means – A country that has an elected leader and elected government. A country where the head of state is not a hereditary monarchy.

This Day is meant to honor the date in which the constituent assembly adopted the constitution specially framed for the nation. On 26th January, 1950, the newly drafted constitution of India came to be enforced by way of replacing the Government of India Act, 1935. Since then, this day is celebrated as the Republic of India year on year as the National event with the public holiday declared in all states of country.

The Need For A Constitution–

India got its freedom from the British Rules on 15 August, 1947. The freedom of the country was brought about by bloodless and peaceful way as visioned under leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. When India was declared as Constituent monarchy on this day, the nation still didn’t have a permanent constitution. Therefore, on 28 August, 1947, the drafting committee was established under the leadership of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar. The Drafting committee submitted a draft of the constitution to assembly on 4 November,1947. Assembly organized a series of session to discuss constitution. The process that stretched over 166 days was spread over 2 years 11 months and 18 days. All sessions were open to public.

The Constitution of India is a document which lays down procedures, powers, duties, fundamental rights and directive principles of government of India & Indian citizens. The governing principle of the Indian constitution is “of the people, for the people & by the people”, which signifies that the power is vested in hands of the citizen of India. It marks the celebration of the power of Indian citizens to select their own government.
